Vol. 27 - Evolving Revolutions

What’s New

Announcing: Le Marche - NYC!

Merriam-Webster defines evolution as "a process in which the whole universe is a progression of interrelated phenomena," and this month, we're taking that definition to heart.

Change can be difficult. The air gets crisp, the leaves start to turn, the flip flops get tucked away, frozen margaritas are swapped out for warm apple cider. And this year, big changes are afoot at kimberlydenman.com. The Floor, our section featuring ready to ship fine art, antiques, and originals is evolving into something new, exciting and transportive.

We are so proud to introduce Le Marché - NYC, our new page that will whisk you away to our New York City showroom and let you experience our full NYC collection of fine art, vintage finds, restored antiques, and stunning originals as if you were there. For us, design has always been a conversation, and we are so happy to be able to share these amazing pieces, designed and curated by us, in context. This page will be updated constantly, as pieces come and go. We hope you feel it's the second best thing to actually being there.

So head on over to Le Marché and let us know what you think!

And watch this space for Le Marché - DTLA, coming soon!

FEATURED PIECE: TORISON

Almost as omnipresent in this universe as evolution, is revolution. And while, in general, we are biased towards everything French, this is the exception. Today, we mean "a progressive motion of a body around an axis so that any line of the body parallel to the axis returns to its initial position while remaining parallel to the axis in transit and usually at a constant distance from it," (thanks again, Webster). Or, put another way, a swivel.

Introducing Torison! The latest addition to our line. Sharp and soft, striking and smooth, and it spins. It just might be the next step in the evolution of your latest design.

What We’re LOVING

Foundation

Season 2

The rules of evolution play out a bit differently in this unfathomably beautiful science fiction epic. Back for its second season, and its section feature in this publication, Foundation has almost nothing to do with the Asimov books upon which it is based, aside from a few names and terms, and makes almost no sense. And we love it!

Just describing the plot might be the most fun you can have while writing a newsletter: The series' main antagonist, Brother Day, is the galactic emperor, and has cloned himself seventeen times as a method of maintaining power. He lives with two of his clones, the previous emperor and the next, but is contemplating getting married and passing on his mantle the old fashioned way. His would-be bride however is more interested in the non-swivel kind of revolution, and his mistress is a robot. The protagonist, Hari Seldon, who died in the first chapter of the book, has preserved himself as two distinct computer programs for 200 years, and somehow, one of them, has been re-embodied in corporal form by a long dead math magician (or is that mathematician?). And somewhere mixed in is a sub plot about a priest trying to get sober.

Foundation is vulnerable to many critiques. It's deeply sincere, very self important, and completely un-sensible, but one thing it can never be accused of is being predictable. And for us, that is principal delight.

On the PAGE

Demon Copperhead

by Barbara Kingsolver

Another loose adaption, or evolution, of a classic piece of literature comes to us this month in far less ridiculous form. Demon Copperhead is a modern day re-imagining of Charles Dickens' David Copperfield. Swapping the slums of 19th century London for modern day Appalachia. The blight on the land switches from the factories of the Industrial Revolution to Opioid epidemic.

The comparisons are stunning and heartbreaking and make a strong case that perhaps we are not evolving that much at all.

Demon Copperhead takes a hard look at the often insurmountable challenges of poverty in a nation that prides itself on equal opportunity. In doing so, it shines a light on a whole generation of children who lost their youth to the opioid epidemic, and somehow, finds a grain of hope in it.

Featured Artist: Carlos Antonio

Have you ever loved a room so much you wanted to take it with you? Have you ever wished you could wear a piece of architecture? No, we're not pitching plot points for Foundation Season 3, Carlos Antonio, interior designer, curator of the modern art in both our showrooms, has another life as a jewelry designer. We couldn't believe it either, but now we are in love.

Carlos' design aesthetic, and collaborative spirit, is on full display in his incredible collection of jewelry. Stunning, striking, expertly crafted, but most of all, each piece captures a feeling. And that's the quality we are most enamored with.

THE WORLD KEEPS TURNING…

...and we keep swiveling. Both revolution, and evolution are inevitable. The only constant is change, but one thing you can count on: we will be back next month, with more comfort, culture, and style. Until then...

Stay Chic,

Kimberly + Laurent
